A Hidden Gem (Or is it?)

Writer: Artilya KArtilya K

With everything that has been going on with my family lately, I wanted to spend some quality time with my kids and treat them to lunch. I have friends in the area and have always passed this restaurant on the way to their homes and kept telling myself ‘I will try it out one day’. Well, the day had finally arrived!

Robin’s Nest Restaurant located in Mount Holly, New Jersey is nestled in the downtown area of the historic town. From the outside it looks like

a nice family home transformed into a small social gathering place. At the time of me writing this, the outside is still beautifully decorated from the holidays and music played lightly in the background as my children and I stepped into the restaurant. The overwhelming smell of aged cheese hit me like an invisible wall. Ok. Maybe I am exaggerating because I have a sensitive nose, but that was the first thing I noticed Lol Besides the overpowering smell, we were pleasantly greeted right away by the array of freshly made pies, cakes and pastries in a glass baking case. From what I read on the website, Robin’s Nest was started by the Winzinger family, and it was a dream of Robin Winzinger to own her own bakery and small café as a pastry chef. You can read more in the about section of the site.

Another thing I noticed was a writing desk situated in front of the cash register filled with Robin’s Nest merchandise. From my understanding, it is one of the many artifacts saved from the previous business that was there.

I had made reservations on Open Table (because I like to be prepared) so we were seated right away. My daughter, son and I were seated in an area that could have easily been a sitting room of an old Victorian home. The atmosphere felt like that of a quaint little home in the middle of an earlier century era. The walls are littered with aged doilies, weathered pictures of flowers, and old advertisements of items such as Colgate toothpaste. It goes back to my earlier statement of the saved artifact remanence of the previous business that was there.

Our server Aidan, a young man looking to be in his late teens/early twenties, greeted us with a slightly crooked smile and gave us menus. The one thing I like about this place is there is enough variety to make multiple return trips, but not enough to overwhelm you. My son and daughter decided to have the tuna melt, while I decided on the Moroccan Tagine with Salmon. We only had to wait maybe ten to fifteen minutes before our food came out and as you can see, they were large portions.

I ended up getting a box for half of mine to eat later. I was already becoming a fan of the restaurant because of the pleasant atmosphere and the large portions I saw as Aiden sat our food on the table but let me tell you!!!! The food here is amazing!!!! Yes! All the exclamation points! Lol A lot of times when I go to restaurants, the vegetarian/vegan/pescatarian

options are bland when it comes to seasonings, but this dish did not disappoint! If anything, I was disappointed in myself for not being able to eat all of it in one sitting Lol My children expressed satisfaction with their meals as well. From the lack of conversation and their animated facial expressions while they ate, I could tell they thought the food was good as well.

About 20 minutes after our food arrived, Aiden came to the table asking about dessert and I

made a joke of “Y’all sure know how to keep people fat” Lol I got a chuckle out him for sure. He came back with a tray full of various desserts ranging from cakes, pies and cookies. He almost sounded like an auctioneer selling cattle pointing out and naming all the desserts. We ended up getting 2 slices of Oreo cheesecake and a slice of coconut rum cake. Man! I know I was full, but I could not resist eating the coconut rum cake I chose right then. There was just enough rum to smell and taste, but not so much that it was intoxicating. Although if I had eaten two pieces, I may have had a little buzz going on Lol Just kidding.

Overall, I spent a little over one hundred dollars plus tip for the three of us for drinks, entrees and desserts. It was well worth every penny!

So, go visit the Robin’s Nest Restaurant and come back and tell me your experience. I can’t wait to hear from you!
